The solo exhibition “Origem” by artist Rio-Roberta Lima at the Tor Road Gallery marks the first public showcase of works produced in Finland and the Brazilian Amazon between 2023 and 2025.

Utilising the gallery's unique verticality, unframed paintings will be installed within the staircase opening, suspended against natural light to create an immersive experience that evokes the feeling of being deep within the woods.

These paintings are central to the exhibition, intertwining Amazonian and Nordic cosmologies to create a visual dialogue between distinct geographical and spiritual landscapes.

In addition to the canvas works, the exhibition features natural, organic elements collected locally in Kobe, alongside smaller works of ink on paper, video pieces, and photographs. Through these moving images and mixed-media installations, the lush, shadowed depths of the rainforest are juxtaposed with the stark, transformative light of the North, creating a space where the artist's identity flows freely between two worlds.

This project marks the artist's second engagement in Japan. Building on previous performances at Kyoto Experiment in 2018, this new body of work expands a Finland-based practice into the realm of painting, offering a distinct perspective on the migrant experience. Through this artistic evolution, the exhibition continues to explore themes of resilience, adaptation, and the endurance of culture within changing environments.

リオ=ロベルタ・リマによる個展「Origem」をトアロード画廊にて開催予定です。本展は、2023年から2025年にかけてフィンランドとブラジルのアマゾン地域で制作された作品を初めて一般公開するものです。

トアロード画廊は、大正時代末期に建てられたビルの、その主階段をギャラリーとして用いています(翻訳者補足)。その垂直空間を活かしながら、ドローイング自体を吊り下げてゆきます。それらの作品は自然光に照らされ、森の奥深くにいるような感覚を呼び起こすことでしょう。没入型の体験ができるような空間を作り出します。

本展の核となるそれらのドローイングは、アマゾンの世界観と、北欧の世界観を織り交ぜるものであり、地理的にも精神的にも異なる風景同士の、視覚的な対話を生み出します。

キャンバス作品に加え、神戸で現地採集した自然の有機的な要素、紙に墨で描く小品、映像作品、写真も展示します。これらの動画像やミクストメディア・インスタレーションを通じて、熱帯雨林の緑豊かで影の深い奥地と、北の厳しくも変容をもたらす光とを対比させ、アーティストのアイデンティティが二つの世界の間を自由に流れる様子を表現します。

本プロジェクトはこのアーティストにとって、日本での2度目の活動です。2018年の「京都エクスペリメント」でのパフォーマンスを踏まえ、その後のフィンランドを拠点とする制作活動では、絵画の領域へと広がってゆきました。これら新作シリーズは、移民の体験を通じて、独自の視点を提示しています。こうした芸術的進化に於いて探求されるものは、変化し続ける環境におけるレジリエンス(回復力)、適応、そして文化の持続性です。
